Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Übung)

Dozent/in: Jörg Addicks

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 18.10.2010 - 04.02.2011 | C 12.006 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this course we want to find out what an English teacher needs to do the job accordingly. It may sound strange but this process is a very in-dividual one on the one hand and at the same time supported by a clear frame work in which you should be able to move (meth-ods/techniques). The individual side of becoming a language teacher is to find out what kind of teacher you are – this is the approach you choose to take. This doesn’t happen over night or during your BA-studies here or after you will have finished your Master but up till then this picture of what kind of teacher you are should be turning from blurred to an almost focused one (Portfolio). This is one important long term aim of university: To find your approach of how to teach English. Studying ‘Second Language Acquisition’ (SLA) will sharpen your eyes of how the fascinating process of learning a second language (most likely) happens. In the lecture you are going to get an overview about the dis-cussion and undisputed facts of SLA (next semester). The latter are the almost indestructible pillars on which the teaching of English rests today. The former is the bit where you can use the most important question word during university time: why? To find your approach of teaching English you should always ask yourself why you think this is a good approach or not. So this is what we are going to do in this semester’s course: To lay the foundation of your approach of teaching English.

Theories of language learning (Vorlesung)

Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 18.10.2010 - 04.02.2011 | Raumangabe fehlt

Inhalt: This seminar will cover different theoretical approaches to foreign language learning. We will briefly look at the ideas behind the behaviorist Audio-lingual Method and will investigate the criticism formulated by Chomsky and others, which in turn lead to new models of learning (or acquisition) processes through insights into the nature of learner languages, errors/mistakes etc. The major part of the semester, however, will cover aspects of learning theory like learner personality (including the age factor), affective factors like motivation, learning strategies, models of language competence as for example theories of listening/reading processes. Since theories of language also play a major role for communicative language teaching, the last phase of this class will be dedicated to a very brief glance at the linguistic underpinnings of this didactic approach.
