Inhalt: This course takes its starting point in the diagnosis that organization theory is currently in a stage of crisis. This is because over the last two decades the horizon of possible forms of organization has significantly widened (also facilitated through trends of digitalization and globalization), while the established theoretical vocabularies of organization studies cannot keep up with these developments. For instance, think here of new forms of organizing such as open source communities, hacker collectives, terrorist networks, or social media firestorms. The course will make students familiar first with main “classical” theories that tend to treat organizations as actors and/or institutions. From this vantage point, the course will further delve into contemporary, state-of- the art theories and research that challenge established ways of what we think of as organization. A special emphasis will be placed on how new and globally available digital technologies change the ways how we can manage and organize. Students will benefit from widening their understanding of what can be an organization, from sparking new ideas for alternative forms of organizing and entrepreneurial ventures, and for sharpening their critical-reflective mindset for rethinking organizations that can be helpful in various future career paths (as managers, organizers, consultants, entrepreneurs, academic scholars, etc.).
