Ecological restoration for sustainability (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Jacqueline Loos, Berta Martín-López

Termin:
wöchentlich | Freitag | 09:00 - 12:00 | 14.10.2019 - 31.01.2020 | C 11.308 Seminarraum

Inhalt: With the increasing human pressure on ecosystems and cultural landscapes, one of the main challenges is to design and develop ecological restoration that supports the preservation of biodiversity, ecosystem services and livelihoods security. A central theme here is to integrate the ecological dimension with the socio-cultural dimension in order to create sustainable landscapes and equitable societies. Therefore, restoration does not only focus on ecological functions and biodiversity, but also on human communities, their knowledge and values. Indeed, restoration requires of society as agents of sustainable transformations. During the seminar in the second module we will examine how we can restore nature, how we can engage different social actors and how we can measure the impacts of restoration strategies on human wellbeing and biodiversity.

Termin:
Einzeltermin | Fr, 25.10.2019, 09:00 - Fr, 25.10.2019, 17:00 | extern | Fieldvisit
Einzeltermin | Mo, 03.02.2020, 09:00 - Fr, 07.02.2020, 16:00 | C 11.307 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this second seminar in the minor programme (governance strand), we focus on methods and methodology design in sustainability governance research. We will build on the basic ideas and understanding achieved in the first seminar. But we will develop these through practical, hands-on experience with a range of research methods commonly used in sustainability governance research. We consider these methods in light of the research case study of the Elbtalaue biosphere reserve. Therefore, we will also learn more about the research background. Students will be encouraged to think deeply about how the different methods they use have different strengths and weaknesses for exploring concepts in governance research. The course will begin with a field visit to the Elbtalaue biosphere reserve. Here we will learn about previous research approaches, and the research that we will contribute to in this course. We will consider the approach of transdisciplinary research in this context, and our roles within it. The course will then resume with a block course at the end of the seminar. Here we will do a series of specific methods workshops, with plenty of hand-on practice and training in data collection and analysis. At the end of these workshops, students will be able to design a research methodology for their research questions in the biosphere. The preliminary list of methods that we will focus on are: • Stakeholder analysis • Document analysis • Interviews • Questionnaires • Participatory methods • Participant observation/ethnography
