Haptic Media Cultures (Seminar)

Inhalt: The seminar will revolve around the book Archaeologies of Touch by David Parisi (2018). Parisi's work constitutes one of the first attempts to approach the topic of haptics in a media-archaeological manner and does so by tracing today's notions of digital touch (e.g. force feedback) back to early experiments with electricity. Archaeologies of Touch draws on the history of sensory physiology as well as computing/interfaces but also sheds light on cultural constructions of touch. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current situation there will be no weekly meetings on campus! Instead, I will offer regular meetings via Zoom (online conference tool, similar to Skype). I will offer a kick off meeting via Zoom on Tuesday, 7th April at 12.30h, to speak about organisational matters. Please contact me via email in case you cannot provide sufficient internet connection for Zoom or have any other troubles attending the online meeting. ASSIGNMENT: If you choose to do the main assignment in this course, you will have to write a book review of 1.500 words on Archaeologies of Touch, this will be 50% of your grade. In either case, you have to hand in one set of »guiding questions« (please see »coursework«) – this will be another 25%. The remaining 25% you will have to do in the second seminar you registered for from the Media Cultures module.
History and Epistemology of Machine Learning (Seminar)

Inhalt: The seminar is aimed at ensuring a historical-epistemological as well as an overall technical understanding of "algorithms" and their "learning processes" within the broad and complex field of "artificial intelligence" (AI). For that purpose, the course will offer a brief introduction to the conceptual history of cybernetics, information theory, AI, and Machine Learning. In order to have an initial overview of learning models, the seminar will provide visual examples and discuss some of the main works from computational theory from the mid- 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century.
Zirkulation und Widerstände. Kritische Perspektiven auf die regulierte Bewegung von Menschen, Material und Daten (Seminar)

Inhalt: Dass Daten, Material und Menschen zirkulieren können, erscheint selbstverständlich. In dem Seminar «Zirkulation und Widerstände. Kritische Perspektiven auf die regulierten Bewegungen von Menschen, Material und Daten», wird die Rede von der Zirkulation genauer in den Blick genommen und die Frage danach gestellt, welche Logiken und Annahmen der Zirkulation eingeschrieben sind. Nichts zirkuliert, ohne auch reguliert zu sein. Die Regulierung ist an Infrastrukturen geknüpft, wie deren technisch-materielle Einrichtungen, aber auch industrielle Standards, gesetzliche Vorgaben, wirtschaftliche Interessen oder auch soziale und gesellschaftliche Bewertungen. Um dies anschaulich zu machen, nehmen wir, vermittelt über kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Texte, konkrete Gegenstände in den Blick. Die Beispiele reichen vom Cloud-Server (Hu 2015) über die Laderampe (Dommann 2014) und die Mülltonne (Weber 2014) bis hin zur mechanischen Einlasskontrolle der ersten Weltausstellung in London (Gleich 2015).
