Inhalt: In order to tackle the grand sustainability challenges our society produces and faces, we need all kinds of attempts to steer towards sustainability, including small local sustainability initiatives, organizations, start-ups and entrepreneurs, as it is about achieving sustainable system transformation. Cities and urban areas play a key role in sustainable development. Therefore, we will look at a special case, an urban real-world laboratory: The "PLATZprojekt" in Hanover. It is a creativity lab in the city; a container village providing space for experimentation, a place to try out ideas for different ways of working, sharing, and organizing. It pursues economic, social and ecological aims, shaping as well the wider urban landscape towards more sustainable futures. Various types of entrepreneurial projects are based here. They grow and develop on the PLATZprojekt, which would like to know: how can we continue to grow and age together with the entrepreneurial projects and accompany them in their transformative process? In order to investigate the question with them, we will get to know the PLATZProjekt on site on 04.11.2020, if the current situation allows it. We will meet there from 16:00 to about 18:30. Afterwards there will be the possibility to take part in the "plenum" to get even more impressions. After our on-site visit, you will take a social entrepreneurship perspective, and you will conduct qualitative case studies in groups, exploring the professionalization processes currently at work for different entrepreneurial projects. Which mechanisms are important for them and which keep them in place? How do the mechanisms and demands of the initiatives change? How do they balance their activities? You will prepare a video presentation of your findings and a feedback and discussion of the results from another group. We will come together for discussion with the PLATZprojekt in our last session. You will be able to integrate all the feedback into your final written paper.

Inhalt: Resourcing in Entrepreneurship: Networks and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems No doubt, Silicon Valley is one of the world’s leading hubs for technological innovation. Pioneering companies like Google, Facebook or PayPal were founded by visionary entrepreneurs with growth ambition. Yet, despite the myth of a solitary genius tinkering in her garage, such entrepreneurial activities and innovations are only possible if diverse actors work together in manifold ways. Here, a major challenge becomes apparent: Although such entrepreneurial activities require manifold, comprehensive resources to work on innovative ideas, develop new products and grow an organization, in most cases, entrepreneurs do not have such necessary resources. In this course, we address this challenge from two perspectives. First, we focus on the role of networks during the entrepreneurship process since new ventures highly rely on resources from external actors. What kind of relationships do new ventures form? How do entrepreneurs form such network ties to acquire funding or first customers? How do their networks evolve throughout the founding process? Second, we focus on one relevant type of environment, providing resources for the founding process: the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Not only entrepreneurs cluster in regions like Silicon Valley, London or Paris, but also investors, research universities, skilled work forces, mentors, and co-working spaces, creating a dynamic setting for technological innovation and high growth entrepreneurship. How do entrepreneurial ecosystems in different regions look like? How do they promote entrepreneurial activities?

Inhalt: Today’s society faces tremendous social issues. Millions of people in developing countries suffer from poverty, unemployment, lack of health care, sanitation and education. Even in rich western countries too many people are excluded from active participation in society and economy, for instance due to their gender, age, race or health. Solving these social issues has been seen as a task of the public and civil sector for a long time, but unfortunately success has been limited. However, in recent years a new breed of entrepreneurs emerged that joined the fight against social issues. They discovered that the power of entrepreneurship can open up totally new opportunities. Social Entrepreneurs view social challenges not as an obstacle, but as an accelerator for innovation. They create inclusive businesses which foster societal change. As the Nobel peace prize winner of 2006 – Mohammed Yunus – once put it: “Every Time I See a Problem, I Create a Business to Solve It!” This course will introduce you to the field of Social Entrepreneurship. We start by building a solid theoretical basis. You will get in-depth insights through a kick-off session on Social Entrepreneurship and learn more about Social Entrepreneurs and their businesses. Next, you will join a research session that will give you the ability to reach out to Social Entrepreneurs and conduct your own research paper.
