Contentious politics and violence in social movements (Seminar)

Inhalt: The seminar introduces students to the multifaceted manifestation of violence in social movements, which can range from sporadic outbreaks of violence to large-scale and long-lasting organized movements that extensively use violence as a political tool, and even unto interstate war. Such violence has been and continues to be endemic through the course of the Cold War and beyond; just in 2020, notable examples include the renewed war in Nagorno-Karabagh, jihad in the Sahel, and the nexus of transnational crime and urban violence in Latin American metropolises. The seminar alternates conceptual sessions that cover core concepts from political science that explain political violence - such as greed vs. grievance and the resource curse - with thematic sessions that select relevant real-world conflicts since 1945 and offer a deep dive in the dynamics and history of these conflicts.
