Global Sustainability Politics (Seminar)

Inhalt: Global sustainability governance takes place in inter- and transnational political, societal and economic contexts and dynamics. In order to better understand opportunities and challenges of sustainable development it is necessary to identify and analyze key contextual conditions. In this perspective the seminar aims at developing an embedded understanding of global sustainability governance.

Nachhaltigkeitssteuerung/Umweltplanung (Seminar)

Inhalt: This seminar focuses on tools and measures of nature and species conservation at international and national level in an environmental context. In addition to an online lecture given by the teacher, students will participate in online discussions, give short (ca. 5-10 minutes) presentations (depending on the number of participants) and conduct tasks in groups: - Red List assessments of threatened species - Delimitation of protected areas - Environmental impact assessment and planning using a regional example If possible, we will try to organize presence meetings and visits to field sites. The first meeting on 16 October will be used to provide an update on the class schedule, to form working groups among the participants, and to assign tasks for the class.

Nachhaltigkeitssteuerung/Umweltrecht (Seminar)

Inhalt: Das normative Ziel der Nachhaltigkeit erfordert die langfristige Bewahrung der Natur einschließlich ihrer Funktionen und Dienstleistungen für den Menschen. Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance beschäftigt sich damit, wie dieses umfassende Gerechtigkeitsziel in einer pluralen und multi-skaligen Gesellschaft erreicht werden kann. Ein wichtige Disziplin ist die Rechtswissenschaft, wobei im Rahmen von Gerichtsverfahren konkrete Fälle auf der Grundlage der bestehenden Rechtslage entschieden werden Die Teilnehmenden sollen die Abwägungsprozesse mit Blick auf die Nachhaltigkeit im Rahmen von Urteilen aus unterschiedlichen Teilgebieten des Umweltrechts kennenlernen, diskutieren und kritisch reflektieren.

Sustainability Economics and Assessment (Seminar)

Inhalt: The course will draw on topics from sustainability economics (including notions such as strong and weak sustainability, natural capital, steady state economics and material and energy flow analysis); indicator theory; resilience and systems thinking and sustainability science. The seminar will start with an over view of the relations between sustainability and indicators and a discussion of indicator theory in the context of sustainability. Next key individual sustainability indicators such as the ecological footprint, the Gini index, the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA), and broader approaches such as EU approach to measuring progress will be critically examined from theoretical and methodological perspectives. Finally we will reflect on the role of assessment in moving towards a more sustainable world. Each seminar will consist of approximately one hour of lecture content and 30 minutes of group work/discussions.
