Introduction to English literature (Vorlesung)

Dozent/in: Ulrike Kristina Köhler

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 12.10.2020 - 29.01.2021 | Online-Veranstaltung

Inhalt: This lecture introduces students to the theories and practice of studying English literature. We will be looking at a variety of theoretical concepts and contemporary approaches and applying these to literary texts from different historical periods and genres. At the same time, we will consider the social and cultural contexts of literature as well as its aesthetic, rhetorical, and ideological aspects. In this lecture, you will acquire the competencies required to study literature effectively. This includes the assessment of resources and the presentation of your findings. Our discussion will be based on a range of primary texts comprising plays, short stories, poems, and the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This lecture will be taught online in a guided self-study. The Moodle-course ‘Introduction to English Literature’ has been designed specifically for this lecture and the accompanying tutorials (´Übungen´). Here you will find much of the course material including compilations of literary excerpts, handouts, a ‘video library’ with links to online resources, quizzes, and tasks as well as the weekly lectures. Once the registration process for the lecture is completed, you will receive further information via email including the enrolment key for the Moodle course. In the middle of the term, we will meet on Zoom in small groups of five, to discuss open questions. To get the most out of these meetings, it is essential that you revisit the primary material and the theoretical models introduced in the previous sessions. The introduction recommended for this course is Meyer, Michael: English and American Literatures. Tübingen: Francke 2011. (ISBN 9783825235505) We will start with the introduction to drama. Please read George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" until the first week of term and Susan Glaspell's one-act play "Trifles" until the second week of term. If you don't already have a copy of Shaw's play and Fitzgerald’s novel, please use the editions listed below. They are reasonably priced: Fitzgerald, F. Scott: The Great Gatsby [1925]. London: Penguin Classics 2012. (ISBN 9780141389936) Shaw, George Bernard: Pygmalion [1914]. London: Penguin Classics 2003. (ISBN 9780141439501) The play "Trifles" (1916) by Susan Glaspell is available under the following link: https://www.one-act-plays.com/dramas/trifles.html If you click on the option 'Literatur', you will see which sources you can find in the 'Seminarapparat 001' compiled for the lecture. These include two online sources and two e-books, which you can access via VPN.
