Inhalt: Seminar description: Authoritarian politics are a salient feature of the contemporary world. Over one-third of all countries and 40 percent of the world’s population leave under some form of authoritarian rule. In recent years, authoritarianism has expanded after decades in decline. This third wave of authoritarianism is characterized by regimes’ ability to adapt and consolidate institutions in a way that no longer follows preconceived authoritarian stereotypes. In this seminar, we focus on understanding how authoritarian politics works. During the semester we will study how autocrats come to power, who the key actors are within the authoritarian apparatus, and what strategies autocrats use to consolidate and extend their position in power. To this end, we will engage with state of the art literature and empirically based analyses on authoritarian politics.
