Digital Transformation: Theories, Methods, and Applications (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Markus Reihlen

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 18.10.2021 - 04.02.2022 | C 6.316 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Digital Transformation has become a strategic imperative for most firms in our world of emergent and continuous changes. Contrary to most treatises on digital transformation, which investigates digitally prone industries such as the software or trading industry, we focus this seminar on the less investigated yet economically highly relevant industries. Accordingly, we draw our attention to patterns of digital transformation in industrial heartland industries such as the automobile and chemical industry. In addition, professional services are also undergoing fundamental changes as technology such as robotic process automation and artificial intelligence is digitalizing transactional as well as experience-based tasks. We will jointly explore specific industry conditions and actions of digital transformation with application to these three industry settings. The approach of this research seminar is threefold. Firstly, theoretically we will apply different theoretical lenses to make sense of digital transformation such as competitive dynamics, ecosystem innovations, business model innovation, or mindset transformation. Secondly, methodologically we take a multi-level approach by exploring three levels of analysis such as the transformation of industries, including changes in regulation, industry structure, and competitive dynamics, the transformation of the firm including business model innovations, external and internal venturing, and finally the transformation on the individual by understanding conditions for changing individual mindsets. Furthermore, we will apply different qualitative research methods such as case study research, grounded theory, and the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) to your research problems. Since this is a research seminar, students will learn how to formulate interesting in contrast to uninteresting research questions, apply theories to make sense of topics to be investigated, and learn how to use selected research methods for conducting a small-scale empirical study. Furthermore, more complex research is usually a team effort. Hence, students will also learn how to work in teams and as a team.

Research Project (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Michael Gielnik

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 18.10.2021 - 04.02.2022 | C 6.026 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this group research project, the students design and implement a research project in the field of the psychology of entrepreneurship. The course has five parts: (1) discussing relevant theories in the field of psychology of entrepreneurship, (2) identifying a research gap and formulating a research question, (3) designing and implementing a quantitative study, (4) analyzing the data based statistical procedures, and (5) writing a research paper.
