English Literature in context I (Übung)

Inhalt: The tutorial complements the lecture "Introduction to English Literature". Its aim is to discuss and apply the theory introduced in the lecture. The tutorial comprises group work activities as well as plenary discussions. The primary literature for the lecture “Introduction to English Literature” is also the mandatory reading for our tutorial, including Shakespeare‘s “The Tempest”, the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, short stories and poems. You should have read act one and two of “The Tempest” until week two of term and should have finished reading the play until the third week of term. The recommended editions for the course are listed below: Orgel, Stephen (ed). The Oxford Shakespeare: The Tempest [1623]. Oxford: Oxford University Press 2008. (ISBN: 9780199535903) Fitzgerald, F.Scott: The Great Gatsby [1925]. London: Penguin Classics 2012. (ISBN 9780141389936) The introduction recommended for this course is Meyer, Michael: English and American Literatures. Tübingen: Francke 2011. Inhalt: This lecture introduces students to the theories and practice of studying English literature. You will acquire the competencies required to study literature effectively. For this purpose, we will be looking at a variety of theoretical concepts and contemporary approaches and applying these to literary texts from different historical periods and genres. At the same time, we will consider the social and cultural contexts of literature as well as its aesthetic, rhetorical, and ideological aspects. Our discussion will be based on a range of primary texts including William Shakespeare‘s “The Tempest”, the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, short stories and poems.
