Inhalt: Casa do Povo is a Jewish cultural center in São Paolo (Brazil) that puts into practice living memory. Instead of erecting a memorial, the Jewish community in São Paolo decided to build a cultural center in the 1950s. Today, the Casa do Povo is home to a Yiddish choir, an anti-fascist boxing club, maintains a periodical, has an open kitchen, and hosts a wide variety of art, cultural and neighborhood initiatives. Ana Druwe, who heads the communications department at Casa do Povo and who is a fellow at LIAS in Culture and Society in the summer semester, will introduce the working methods of Casa do Povo as a special ecosystem and develop a model together with the students on how the principle of Casa do Povo can be implemented in the Kunstraum - at least over the course of a semester. Museums, cultural centers, and autonomous spaces should embody what Yona Friedman calls "realizable utopias" – exercises in imagination, laboratories for new ways of living, and full-scale rehearsals of desirable ways to live in community. If institutions are to be worlds that embrace diverse worlds, their infrastructures must be understood as an ongoing creative practice—gestures, conversations, and physical spaces that enable coexistence and conviviality. An institution conceived this way does not need to swallow the world; it only needs to embrace it, densify it, and become a home for many homes. It doesn't need to grow, but to proliferate. It should blend transparency and opacity in a dynamic "musical chairs" dance that publicly reveals its processes while protecting its community through a dynamic governance, cultivating deeper and more trusting relationships. It must be porous to maintain relevance in different contexts and capable of continuous reinvention. Using Casa do Povo as a case study, this practical seminar aims to explore experiences based on communication practices (proliferation, transparency, opacity, and porosity), discuss institutional infrastructures with the students on a practical level, and consider Kunstraum as a potential site for a temporary intervention. For this intervention Ana Druwe has invited the artist Wisrah V.C. da R. Celestino who will develop an exhibition during their stay at Leuphana based on the question of belonging. They will give a public lecture, discuss the (political) meaning of object descriptions and gives a workshop about how to describe an object. During the seminar we will also reflect on how the students can activate the exibition during the opening time.
