Economic Statecraft (Seminar)

Inhalt: Economic statecraft is the use of economic tools, i.e. financial and regulatory, to achieve foreign policy objectives. For a long time, the primary focus in International Relations was on the threat or use of force, with tools for economic statecraft being seen as mere symbolic gestures or tools of little consequence. Nevertheless, in the last three decades, there has been a remarkable surge in the utilization of tools for economic statecraft. A recent example is the use of economic sanctions to respond to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This course familiarizes students with the different tools available in the economic statecraft toolkit, including trade, foreign direct investment, and sanctions. We will study how and when governments select from their economic statecraft toolkit—which frequently involves selecting between economic rewards and punishment. Additionally, we will study the conditions under which these tools work best, while emphasizing the conceptual and methodological issues involved in measuring their effectiveness.

Gender Perspectives in Politics: Exploring Power, Participation, and Representation (Seminar)

Inhalt: Despite significant advancements in many fields, women remain notably underrepresented in political spaces, signaling deep-rooted inequalities that persist across societies. This course takes a historical and comparative approach, examining case studies from both the Global South and the Global North, to uncover the origins, manifestations, and implications of gender disparities in politics. Utilizing an intersectional lens, we will explore not only the realm of formal politics but also consider the private sphere as a political arena. Throughout the semester, students will engage with a diverse range of topics including political behavior, political institutions, public policy, development, and the burgeoning field of gender diversity in politics. This exploration will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the field of gender and politics and foster an understanding of the multifaceted ways in which gender shapes political dynamics and outcomes. The course is designed to be highly interactive and participatory, encouraging students to critically engage with current literature, challenge prevailing narratives, and develop their own research inquiries. By the end of the course, students will be equipped not only with foundational knowledge but also with the analytical tools necessary to contribute to ongoing debates and further research in the field of gender and politics.

Politik und Medien im Vergleich (Seminar)

Inhalt: Der Verhältnis zwischen Politik und Medien ist von zentraler Bedeutung für das Funktionieren insbesondere westlicher Demokratien. Doch vor allem in den letzten Jahrzehnten haben sich die rechtlichen, wirtschaftlichen und nicht zuletzt technologischen Rahmenbedingungen für Medien und politischen Journalismus teils dramatisch verändert. Diese neuen Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge stehen im Mittelpunkt des Seminars mit vergleichender Perspektive.
