Inhalt: Dialectical materialism is a cogent aspect of Marxian approach to history. It is thus fundamental for Marxist historians to understand and interpret the pasts in their constant state of changing social relations. The interconnectedness of the past, using the spectacle of materialism, forms the basis of the Marxian interpretation of history. Before Karl Marx, historians have only been interested in the study and writing of history from the standpoint of the role of the state in social formations. Marxist historiography critiqued this approach in defense of the dominance of the impacts of the daily economic activities of the people in the overall transformation of their societies. This paper intends to establish that complementarity does exists between the Marxian interpretation of history and the mandate of the fiery-academic field of African studies. African history is a relevant field and bulwark of African studies. The historical antecedents, purpose and direction of the movement of African studies can only be provided by the field. This paper thus will focus on the possible bond between the field of African history and Marxism. This bond expectedly will be established in order to uncover the most scientific means in advancing the epistemological and pedagogical approaches of African studies. This paper will rely on historical methodology in affirming its observations. The paper ultimately submits that in the long run, a Marxian emancipatory approach to the field of African history and certainly African studies has the potentials of influencing progressive political and social outcomes. Keywords: Marxism, African studies, dialectical materialism, African history and historians.
