Inhalt: Die Vorlesung widmet sich dem Gegenstandsbereich der politischen Anthropologie. Sie fragt nach den jeweiligen Erkenntnisgewinnen und Risiken einer Verbindung von Politik und Anthropologie und macht die Teilnehmenden mit einschlägigen Debatten und Positionen vertraut. Dabei interessieren disziplinäre Grenzen weniger als Argumente; Ideengeschichte trifft auf systematische Fragen sowie auf philosophische, soziologische ebenso wie ethnologische Forschung.
Western political thought in retrospective: From the formation of the nation-state to the present rise of the extreme right. (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course addresses not really the origins of the extreme right rather to understand how the contradictions within the problematic formation of the nation-state relate to the emergence of the extreme right. The argument is that the different ideological inspirations that have shaped the different forms of extreme right, despite of sharing often an irrational and anti-enlightenment ethos, they as well relate to dynamics that shaped the formation of the liberal nation-state. In this perspective, the extreme right should not be seen merely as a cyclical, external threat to the liberal democratic order during times of crisis. Rather, it represents a persistent force that strategically taps into shared societal imaginaries deeply embedded in our societies. By exploiting these contradictions, the extreme right distorts central concepts of Western political thought, filling them with essentialist and reactionary content
