Academic Writing (Group I) (Übung)

Inhalt: Do you have a good command of academic vocabulary? Do you know how to write a proper introduction to a research paper? Or what strategies apart from the summary you can use for the conclusion? Do you know the difference between informal and formal English? Do you have a good idea of how to vary your sentence structure or integrate creative elements into your academic prose? Do you know the ins and outs of using AI-based writing tools without sounding like a bot or relying too heavily on them? If you have answered no to two or more of these questions, then this might be the course for you. Each participant will gain experience reading and responding to academic texts, improve research and analytical skills, as well as have ample opportunities to actively apply course concepts through weekly writing activities. Students will learn strategies for writing effective academic texts and critically evaluate a number of conventional and AI-powered reference works and writing tools. Form of Assessment (50% of module Grade): in-class writing assignment

Contrasting Ideas, Conflicting Interests – Presenting Yourself and Your Ideas successfully in Spoken and Written Form (Übung)

Inhalt: Disagreements and conflicts are prevalent constituents of our culture and play an important role in various domains. Understanding your role in different contexts contributes to a broader understanding of human culture and society. The seminar aims at introducing the practice of debating different opinions and develop skills of critical and argumentative reasoning. The class will introduce some standard debating formats, how to formulate and use arguments, and how to protocol and evaluate debates.

Creative Writing: Poetry and Short Fiction (Übung)

Inhalt: Interested in awakening your creative spirit and discovering your potential for equally creative output? This seminar puts theory into practice by offering a variety of exercises to ignite ideas, experiment with literary styles and genres as well as give and receive constructive criticism in peer-editing sessions. This seminar will help you develop your own style and voice when writing poetry (including Haikus) and vignettes. In the end, students will have a portfolio (for lack of a better name), consisting of 2-3 Haikus, 2-3 vignettes, some flash fiction, maybe a part of a play, and 2-3 poems.

English for Social Occupations (BA Soz.Päd) (Übung)

Inhalt: This course is intended as an opportunity for students to overcome fears of speaking and reading texts in the subject matter and will include short readings in English with seminar-style discussion to follow. Participation will be determined by comfort-level of individual students. The level of discussion and language used will be determined based upon the prior knowledge of students – no specific English level is expected or required upon entry or exit of the course.

Sound Matters: English Pronunciation and Beyond. B2.2 (Übung)

Inhalt: Spoken language matters — in communication, academic life, and future teaching contexts. Yet pronunciation and spoken fluency often receive less systematic attention than grammar or writing in university language programs. In this weekly 90-minute course, students explore spoken English through a hands-on, discovery-based approach. Using their own recordings as well as selected speech samples, they investigate key features of English pronunciation, including vowels, consonants, stress, rhythm, pausing, and pitch. Students also work with basic acoustic tools such as Praat to visualize speech and connect what they hear with observable patterns in the speech signal. Beyond individual sounds, the course introduces selected insights from conversation analysis to explore how pronunciation and prosody shape spoken interaction, including turn-taking, emphasis, and the flow of dialogue. The course further addresses how pronunciation and fluency are evaluated, discussed, and taught in second language contexts.

Words and Beyond: Enhancing Your Vocabulary (Group 1) (Übung)

Inhalt: Do you find yourself dodging the dictionary, confounded by collocations, terrified by translation yet somehow in love with LEO? Perhaps you just feel overwhelmed by words and their wily ways. If you haven’t found your inner “word nerd” yet (and even if you have), this seminar will make a logophile (or maybe even a logomaniac) out of you. After a brief introduction to the perils of translation and the benefits of effective cross-referencing skills, subsequent course topics will include but are not limited to: eponyms; acronyms and initialisms; clippings and blends; connotations and denotations; homonyms, homophones, and homographs. Using a variety of cultural texts (e.g. lyrics/poetry, fiction and non-fiction, films and television series, etc.) as potential sources, you will begin collecting and selecting new words for practical as well as creative exercises. The ultimate objective is not only to learn how to work with words but also how to make them work for you. Form of assessment (50% of the module grade): in-class written assignment on July 7, 2026.
