Competence and standard orientation in foreign language teaching (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz
Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 18:15 - 19:45 | 12.10.2009 - 29.01.2010 | W 216
Inhalt: Since the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment and its adaptation to the Bildungsstandards, language teachers have started to reconsider task orientated approaches and the role of the four skills as well as of mediation in the EFL classroom. In this seminar we will look at definitions of communicative and linguistic competence (competence models like the CEF) and then study samples of good practice in implementing them. The focus will be on both receptive and productive skills, and the aspect of assessing proficiency will also play a role. We will also look at educational and political consequences of standard setting and centralised testing (Vergleichsarbeiten, Abschlussarbeiten) and portfolio assessment. Due to the language of the documents to be analysed, these sessions will be entirely in German.
Reconstructing and constructing English lessons (Praktikum)
Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 12.10.2009 - 29.01.2010 | C 12.105 Seminarraum
Inhalt: In dieser Vorbereitungsveranstaltung üben Sie natürlich auch „Praktisches“, wie man Englischunterricht in der gewählten Schulform plant und evaluiert - insofern ist dies eine „Fortsetzung“ der Veranstaltung aus Ihrem 4. BA-Semester, „Planning and Evaluating Lessons“. Englisch sprechen.

Teaching Intercultural Competence (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz
Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 12.10.2009 - 29.01.2010 | W 216
Inhalt: Traditional approaches to Landeskunde (area studies) were restricted to the teaching of knowledge about the other country. Teaching Intercultural Competence (ICC), however, means to help learners become aware of similarities and differences between their own and the target culture, to reflect on stereotypes and to change perspectives in order to perceive one's own and the other culture from different points of view. Recent syllabuses in national as well as international contexts (cf the Common European Framework for Languages) consider ICC as one of the main educational objectives in FLT. In this class we shall therefore look at different approaches to the teaching of ICC. We can draw on numerous video recordings from classes at Sekundarstufe I which demonstrate the wide range of practical teaching methods

Storytelling in the Language Classroom (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Sebastian Schmidt
Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 12.10.2009 - 29.01.2010 | C 14.001 Seminarraum
Inhalt: “...narrative in school is not something to be consumed…but something to be made by every person in every possible way.” (Rosen 1998, 168) Stories are vehicles for journeys into a world of imagination, created by language, that children can enter and enjoy. Thus sharing stories in the foreign language with your students is a central part of classroom life at primary as well as secondary level, which aims at promoting language growth, creative thinking and motivation in language learning. The structure of the course puts great emphasis on: · a balanced mix of theoretical aspects and examples from classroom practice · your active involvement and · cooperative learning. In the first part of the course I would like to give you a general overview of the topic of teaching and learning through stories in the classroom. Some of the issues I would like to introduce and discuss are: the reasons for using stories in the classroom, different types of stories, criteria for selecting stories, the role of assessment and ways of using a story. In the second part of the course you will have the opportunity to focus on an individual aspect of the topic of stories that interests you. After a critical look at the literature and the formulation of a research question in groups. You will have a choice of projects you may do with your partner(s). Choices involve: a) teaching a story, researching a question b) participant observation of a teacher doing a story in class Your reflections and findings will be part of a presentation which you are going to give at the end of the course.
Vocabulary: Learning and Teaching (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Sebastian Schmidt
Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 12.10.2009 - 29.01.2010 | C 7.320 Seminarraum
Inhalt: “A word is a microcosm of human consciousness.” (Vygotsky) The learning and teaching of vocabulary has attracted considerable interest in recent years by acquisition specialists, language teachers as well as learners of a foreign language. This is due to new research findings, the recently improved accessibility of computerized corpora and also due to new approaches to the teaching of foreign languages. However, the implementation of new ideas concerning the learning and teaching of vocabulary has not really reached foreign language classrooms, and this throughout Germany. Many teachers still teach vocabulary as they were taught. The structure of the course puts great emphasis on: a) a balanced mix of theoretical aspects and examples from classroom practice b) your active involvement and c) cooperative learning. In the first part of the seminar I will give you a general overview of the learning and teaching of vocabulary. Some of the issues I will introduce and would like to discuss are: What is a word and how do words relate to one another, how many words do learners need to know, how is the knowledge of words acquired, organised and retrieved, how can you teach and test vocabulary? In the second part of the course you will have the opportunity to focus on an individual aspect of the learning and teaching of vocabulary that interests you. After a critical look at the literature and the formulation of a research question in groups of three, you will watch and analyse a lesson. Your reflections and findings will be part of a presentation which you are going to give at the end of the course.
