Meet our Researchers: three questions for ...

... Verena Meyer (Verena.Meyer@leuphana.de)
Doctoral project: "Critical Perspectives in Entrepreneurship Research"
Research group: Economics/Entrepreneurship, Management & Innovation

GRADUATE SCHOOL: "And what are you writing about again?" At a house party, how would you summarise your research project in a few sentences without using technical terms?
I am researching critical perspectives on entrepreneurship. So I am looking at what we typically understand as entrepreneurship and who we picture as an entrepreneur - and who not. As researchers, we are a big part of creating the concept of entrepreneurship, so it is important to reflect our own discussions and scrutinize why some positions become dominant while others are rarely heard. And this "meta" perspective is the starting point of my research.

GS: "Writings the world does need!" To what extent does your doctoral thesis fill existing research gaps?
We know a lot about entrepreneurship, but typically only about certain forms. We know a lot about entrepreneurs, but only about certain entrepreneurs. My thesis contributes to a broader understanding of entrepreneurship that goes beyond Silicon Valley startups, looks more at everyday entrepreneurship and aims to develop a better and more intersectional conceptualization of diversity in entrepreneurship research.

GS: What is the connecting factor between your research topic and entrepreneurial practice?
With my research, I always want to change things for the better and make an actual societal impact. Doing research from this "meta" critical perspective on entrepreneurship means to question underlying assumptions, stereotypes that we reproduce, or too narrow views of entrepreneurship. This leads to a more differentiated understanding of entrepreneurship that, in turn, contributes to a more diverse world in entrepreneurship research and practice.
