Gradschool Newsletter // Docs & Postdocs

Dear doctoral students and postdocs,

Welcome to a new issue of GRADSCHOOL NOTES // DOCS & POSTDOCS!

In this issue, in LOOKING INWARDS we highlight the new features of the Qualification Fund, as well as at places available at short notice in the three-month further education programme Lehre am Start (in German only).

In LOOKING OUTWARDS we refer to three calls for postdocs: the Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship, the call for membership in the Junge Akademie and the transdisciplinary Postdoc Fellowship Programme at KLI Klosterneuburg (Austria).

In MEET OUR RESEARCHERS, Esther-Marie Verbücheln gives an insight into her dissertation in professionalisation research.

WHAT'S GOING ON @LEUPHANA? gives an overview of upcoming events of the Graduate School, the Transfer Service and Academic Staff Development.

If you have any suggestions for our newsletter, please send an email to: graduate.community@leuphana.de. We look forward to your feedback!

Meet our Researchers

Three questions for Esther-Marie Verbücheln

(Working) title of the doctoral thesis: Adaptive Classroom Musicianship - Formation and Development of Professional Competence in Music Teaching Students

School of Education
Doctoral Programme: Professionalisation Research

Contact: esther.verbuecheln@leuphana.de

1) "And what are you writing about again?" How would you summarise your research project in three sentences at a flat-sharing party without using technical terms?

I am trying to find out how students of music teaching are prepared for practical music making in school and how we can improve university teaching with regard to this. To this end, we have developed a new type of university seminar in a team of teachers, students and researchers. Before, during and after the seminar, I collected research data from the participating students in order to analyse it now.

2) "Writings the world desperately needs!" To what extent does your dissertation fill existing research gaps in the professional community?

Little is known about the nature of the professional competence of music teaching students, especially with regard to making music with school classes. At the same time, the music curricula of the German federal states call for the promotion of practical music competencies in students and attribute high learning and experiential potential to musical creation. This discrepancy should be significantly reduced by my dissertation.

3) What points of contact do you see for your dissertation topic in practice?

By differentiating the professional competence of students and the subsequent research-based adaptation of university teaching, I hope to improve the preparation of students for their future tasks in schools. The resulting successful promotion of students in the field of music practice would be very desirable.

What's Going on @ Leuphana?

What added value does my research have for society? The event "Idea, Innovation, Impact!" (in German) organised by the Graduate School in cooperation with the Transfer Service will address this question on 23 November. Registrations are possible until 8 November.

Two online events on careers in science management for doctoral students and postdocs are offered in the academic personnel development programme. In addition to "Science management as a career option for academics?" (in German only) on 21 October, doctoral students and postdocs can talk to a leader in science management on "Role Model Monday" (21 November).
