Leuphana Graduate School // February 2023

Gradschool Newsletter // Docs & Postdocs

Dear doctoral candidates and postdocs,

Welcome to a new issue of the GRADSCHOOL NEWSLETTER DOCS & POSTDOCS!

In this issue, we are looking inwards at the DFG grant for the Leuphana Open Access Publication Fund in the years 2023 - 2025.

In LOOKING AHEAD, we refer to the call for proposals for the German Study Award 2023, a fellowship from the Krupp Foundation and the ANR-DFG call for proposals for German-French research projects.

In MEET OUR RESEARCHERS, Maria Brück gives a very special (video) insight into her dissertation in sustainability science.

WHAT'S GOING ON @ LEUPHANA? The academic human resources development offers various workshops in English for the competence development for both doctoral candidates and postdocs. Finally, the doctoral student's council is still desperately looking for new committed doctoral candidates.

If you have any suggestions for our newsletter, please send an email to: graduate.community@leuphana.de.

We look forward to your feedback!

Best regards,

The Graduate School Team

Looking Inwards

The German Research Foundation (DFG) will subsidise Leuphana's Open Access Publication Fund from 2023 to 2025. This follows a successful application by MIZ:Bibliothek in the DFG funding programme "Open Access Publication Costs". This primarily expands the group of people who are eligible for funding via this fund:
The DFG funds articles for which the corresponding author is a member of Leuphana University of Lüneburg up to the publication date and states Leuphana as the primary affiliation in the article. An employment or service relationship with Leuphana is not necessary. Thus, for example, visiting researchers and all enrolled doctoral candidates can also claim DFG funding. You can find more information on how to apply here.

Looking Outwards

The deadline for applications for the German Study Award 2023 of the Körber Foundation is 1 March. The competition is aimed at young academics from all disciplines who have submitted an excellent dissertation of particular social significance in 2022. With three top prizes of 25,000 euros each, it is one of the most highly endowed German prizes for young researchers. The competition takes place under the patronage of the President of the German Bundestag Bärbel Bas.
Further information (in German only) can be found here.

The Krupp Foundation invites doctoral candidates in the humanities to apply for funding for a stay at Stanford University as part of their dissertation project. The Foundation will award three fellowships for a period of up to 6 months. The scholarship will start at the beginning of January 2024 and is endowed with € 3,000 per month. The Foundation will provide a one-off grant of €3,000 to cover travel expenses and visa fees. Applications are possible for the following subjects: English Studies, American Studies, German Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Classical Philology, Art History, Musicology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Spanish Philology and Latin American Studies, Theatre Studies, Comparative Literature. Application deadline is 31 March 2023.
Information on the programme and the online application form can be found here.

The open-topic funding programme of the agreement between the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and the German Research Foundation for scientific cooperation in the humanities and social sciences is announced for the 17th time (application deadline: 8 March 2023). Doctoral candidates and postdocs are eligible to apply. Further information can be found here.

Meet Our Researchers

Three questions for Maria Brück

Working title of the dissertation: Disaggregated analysis of ecosystem services in southwestern Ethiopia Faculty: Sustainability
Doctoral Programme: Sustainability Science

Contact: brueck@leuphana.de

1. "And what are you writing about again?" At a flat-sharing party, how would you summarise your research project in three sentences without using technical terms?

In my research I deal with human-nature relations and questions of justice. I analyse the different ways in which people take advantage of nature. This depends, for example, on the values we ascribe to nature or the context in which we live. For an alternative approach to my doctoral thesis, you can find a video here in which I have presented the basic idea of my research in a dance-like way.

2. "Writings the world desperately needs!" To what extent does your dissertation fill existing research gaps in the professional community?

Many studies that deal with ecosystem services put a monetary value on nature or do not take into account the diversity of human relationships with nature. So they work with aggregated numbers or results. With my research, I want to find out how to systematically analyse differences in human-nature relationships. For example, I investigated what values people in Ethiopia ascribe to nature and why.

3. What links do you see to your dissertation topic in practice?

In our study region in Ethiopia, there are many smallholders who are directly dependent on nature. Understanding who benefits from nature, where and how, can help shape more sustainable and equitable policy proposals. For example: Who benefits in what ways from coffee when production is intensified and geared towards export? Who benefits from establishing organically grown coffee in combination with eco-tourism offers?

If you are interested in presenting your research project in our short interview in GRADSCHOOL NEWLSETTER DOCS & POSTDOCS, please write to: graduate.community@leuphana.de.
