Gradschool Newsletter // Docs & Postdocs

Dear doctoral students and postdocs,

welcome to a new issue of GRADSCHOOL NOTES // DOCS & POSTDOCS! As the new name suggests, in the future we will also focus on information and qualification offers for postdocs. In this issue, LOOKING INWARDS focuses the first Let's Talk Karriere! on campus, at which alumnae with doctorates in the fields of political science report on their career paths. In addition, the program for this year's Summer School, "How Many Roads...?" is now available online. LOOKING OUTWARDS, highlights the results of the nacaps doctoral survey, draws attention to the SPARK survey for female scientists, and the online event "Karriereweg FH/HAW Professorin". In MEET OUR RESEARCHERS, Simon Norris provides insight into his dissertation in the field of sustainability management. Finally, WHAT'S GOING ON @LEUPHANA? provides an overview of further qualification formats for PhD students and postdocs.

If you have any suggestions for our newsletter, please email: graduate.community@leuphana.de. We look forward to your feedback!

Best regards,

The Graduate School Team

Meet our Researchers: three questions for ...

Simon Norris  (norris@leuphana.de)
Doctoral project: Towards a needs-based theory of stakeholder value creation in sustainable business models
Research group: Sustainability Science

GRADUATE SCHOOL: "And what are you writing about again?" At a house party, how would you summarise your research project in a few sentences without using technical terms?
I investigate how companies can create value for different actors with their business model. The individual writings of my dissertation address different aspects of this, e.g. the role of the supply chain, the linkages of customer value with value for other actors, or the possible valuation thereof. In my framework paper, I compare the underlying perspectives on value creation.

GS: "Writings the world really needs!" To what extent does your doctoral thesis fill existing research gaps?
In addition to the contributions of the individual writings, my proposed framework paper makes a fundamental contribution: surprisingly, in the business model literature, the central concept of stakeholder value is almost never explained, which is why the central question of how such value can be created is actually never answered. I fill this gap with a value creation theory based on the subjective needs of different stakeholders.

GS: What is the connecting factor between your research topic and practice?
There are different points of contact: One of the writings develops clear principles on how companies can measure and evaluate stakeholder value. Another paper shows very different ways in which companies can communicate this stakeholder contribution to target groups. Across the board, companies should not just focus on metrics like CO2 emissions, but understand how these numbers interact with the needs of their stakeholders.
