Awards

Leuphana University's innovative profile and the top-class achievements of its members in research, teaching and transfer are regularly recognized by major awards and prizes. This high recognition from the scientific community and society strengthens the university in its profile building and at the same time motivates the university community for future excellence.

A selection of the awards and prizes since 2007:

  • 2023: Funding for the establishment of the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society from the "Niedersächsisches Vorab" of the Volkswagen Foundation.
  • 2023: Top 3 rankings in all relevant sub-rankings of the Niedersachsen University Entrepreneurship Monitoring 2022 among all medium-sized universities in Lower Saxony
  • 2023: 3rd place in the Founders' Radar 2022 of the Stifterverband in the overall ranking of medium-sized universities
  • 2023: Successful acquisition of an ERC Consolidator Grant by Prof. Dr. David Abson
  • 2023: Successful acquisition of an ERC Starting Grant by Prof. Dr. Stephan Scheel
  • 2022: Funding and award in the federal-state initiative as "Innovative University
  • 2022: Funding by the Foundation Innovation in Higher Education in the program "Freiraum 2022" (four individual applications)
  • 2022: Funding in the funding initiative "Raumlabore" by the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany and the Dieter Schwarz Foundation
  • 2022: Funding for the Faculty of Cultural Studies through a "Freigeist Fellowship" from the Volkswagen Foundation
  • 2021: Funding by the Foundation Innovation in University Teaching in the program "Strengthening University Teaching through Digitization" (one individual and one joint application)
  • 2021: Award of the University President Prof. (HSG) Dr. Sascha Spoun as University Manager of the Year 2021 by the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT and the CHE Center for Higher Education Development in recognition of the development of Leuphana University Lüneburg since 2006 as one of "the most impressive 'change cases' in the German academic landscape"
  • 2021: Leuphana's digital alumni management receives the alumni-club.net (acn) "Premium D-A-CH" alumni award
  • 2020: Successful acquisition of an ERC Consolidator Grant by Prof. Dr. Benjamin Klusemann
  • 2020: Funding of the Lichtenberg Professorship for Provenance Studies by the Volkswagen Foundation.
  • 2018: award in the competition "Data Literacy Education" by the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation
  • 2018: repeated award as Fair Trade University
  • 2018: EMAS environmental management award by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK)
  • 2018: Award of the Utopia Conference as university pearl of the month November by the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany (Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft)
  • 2017: Award in the competition "Campus and Community" by the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany
  • 2017: renewed award as most founder-friendly university in the Founder Radar 2016 by the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany)
  • 2015: Leuphana Professor Christian Welzel honored by being accepted as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
  • 2014: renewed award as most founder-friendly university in the Gründungsradar 2013 of the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany
  • 2013: Award of Leuphana Professor Michael Frese by admission as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
  • 2013: Award in the competition "Exist-Gründungskultur" by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as one of the best German start-up universities
