Studying Digital Media in Lüneburg and Hong Kong

As part of the Double Degree Programme, you will complete your Digital Media degree at two universities:

  • four semesters at Leuphana College
  • four semesters at the School of Creative Media at CityUHK

Over the course of eight semesters, you study in two different academic and cultural contexts, combining theoretical and critical approaches with practice-based work in digital media.

Upon successful completion, you are awarded two degrees:

  • a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media from Leuphana University of Lüneburg
  • and either a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media (BACM) OR a Bachelor of Arts and Science in New Media (BAS) from CityUHK

The double degree allows you to combine the theoretical foundation developed at Leuphana with intensive project-based work at the School of Creative Media in Hong Kong.

Study Plan & Timing

The double degree programme extends across eight semesters: the first two and final two semesters are completed at Leuphana College, with the four middle semesters spent at the School of Creative Media at CityUHK.

Studies at Leuphana begin with the winter semester (October to March), followed by the summer semester (April to September). Students participating in the double degree programme depart for Hong Kong in August. At CityUHK, the academic year is divided into two semesters: Semester A runs from September to December and Semester B from January to May. An optional Summer Term is available for additional coursework. After completing two academic years in Hong Kong, you return to Leuphana for their final two semesters.

At CityUHK, students follow a fixed study plan within the School of Creative Media. Courses are integrated into the Digital Media programme and may be recognised towards the Major as well as parts of the Minor and Complementary Studies, depending on course selection and equivalency agreements.

City University of Hong Kong

The campus of CityUHK is located in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong.

In the QS World University Rankings 2026, CityUHK is ranked 63rd worldwide and 7th in Asia

Students at CityUHK come from many different countries. English is the main language of instruction.

At the School of Creative Media, the focus is on project-based learning, supporting the development of practical skills in digital media.

Accommodation

International students are usually accommodated in the student residence of CityUHK. Accommodation is functional and basic, with shared living arrangements and limited private space.

Rooms are shared double rooms of approximately 13–15 m², with bathrooms shared between four students. Rooms are furnished with essentials such as a bed, desk and cupboard. Bedding must be purchased by students themselves. Kitchen facilities are shared on each floor and are minimally equipped; cooking utensils must also be provided individually.

Visitors from outside are not permitted in the halls. Visits from other residents are only allowed during designated visiting hours.

Application

Participation in the programme is limited and subject to a selection process. Selection is based on an application process that requires the following documents and meets the following requirements:

  • letter of motivation
  • curriculum vitae
  • proof of enrolment
  • transcript of records
  • proof of English language proficiency
  • Cantonese A1 course successfully completed
  • participation in a selection interview

After a successful application, you are responsible for:

  • applying for a Hong Kong residence visa
  • fulfilling all CityUHK requirements
  • organising accommodation independently
  • arranging travel to and from Hong Kong

Living in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world. You should take this into account when planning your stay and budgeting for daily expenses.

Food options on and around campus are diverse. Meals in student canteens at CityUHK typically range between HK$50 and HK$70. Eating out is very common in Hong Kong and can be more affordable than cooking, particularly when using local food options.

Students following a vegetarian or vegan diet may find options very limited and should plan accordingly.

In addition, you should budget for public transport, study materials and personal expenses, as well as amenities which are not provided by the accommodation.

Fees

During your stay abroad, you are still required to pay the semester contribution to Leuphana.

The semester ticket may be refunded by AStA for the period abroad, if proof of absence for more than 120 consecutive days during the exchange period is submitted.

There are no additional fees at CityUHK.

Scholarships

You can apply for the following funding opportunities:

Both funding options are generally approved for one year. An extension (particularly for BAföG for study abroad) is possible under certain conditions. You should therefore plan to cover part of the costs yourself in the second year.
