Inhalt: The seminar deals with central questions and topics in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), focussing on philosophical, ethical, social and political aspects. Firstly, the fundamental question of the nature of intelligence will be addressed, with both classical and modern definitions of intelligence being scrutinised. In this context, we will discuss how the concept of intelligence has become established in Western societies and what social and cultural dimensions it contains. In this course, we will address the nature of (artificial) intelligence by examining key works of analytic and continental philosophy. With the advent of ChatGPT and other language-based AI models, the question of what exactly intelligence is and how it should be measured has become more pressing than ever. To aid us in this exploration, we will read and discuss texts by philosophers such as Descartes, Henri Bergson, Catherine Malabou, John Searle, Hubert Dreyfus, Philip K. Dick, Nick Bostrom, and other authors who bridge the analytic and continental divide. Through close reading and discussion of these texts, we will develop a deeper understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of (A)I and evaluate the perils as well as the promise of this technology.
