Philosophy of (Artificial) Intelligence (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Paul Matthews

Termin:
14-täglich | Samstag | 14:15 - 17:45 | 26.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 16.203 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this course, we will be inquiring into the nature of (artificial) intelligence by exploring central works in analytic and continental philosophy. With the introduction of ChatGPT and other language based AI models, the question as to what intelligence is exactly and how it should be measured has become more pressing than ever. To help us in our exploration, we will be engaging readings from the likes of Descartes, Henri Bergson, Catherine Malabou, John Searle, Hubert Dreyfus, Philip K. Dick, Nick Bostrom, and other authors spanning the analytic and continental divide. Through close reading and discussion of these texts, we will gain a deeper understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of (A)I and work to assess its perils and promises. In addition to questions related directly to intelligence, we will also be asking ourselves questions regarding the ethics and implementation of (A)I especially as it relates to the ethical treatment of intelligent animals and/or machines.
