Understanding transformation - shaping the future (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: Note: We will simultaneously translate the German lecture into English for all those who don't understand German. That means, the content of the German and the English lecture is the same. Headphones can be picked up in front of the stage at the beginning for a deposit (student ID). The lecture forms the framework for the “Transformation” module: it introduces the complex topic of shaping a sustainable future and highlights, among other things, the four subject areas of “transformation,” “values,” “justice,” and “responsibility” from a historical and design-oriented perspective. These concepts are shaping discussions about our future all over the world today. Addressing them often raises even more questions than are initially answered and can sometimes feel like searching for the Holy Grail. So why make them the subject of a lecture for all first-year students? Well, why not? You will quickly realize that these questions come up again and again, regardless of what you study and what you do in your free time. Engaging with them can help you structure your ways of thinking and acting: starting with your own role not only as a student, but as a person who lives and learns, eats and drinks, shops and travels, to the role of science in general: Who is responsible for what? What do we consider fair, how do we imagine a sustainable future? We will look at contributions that can offer certain approaches, but we will also be happy to cross disciplinary boundaries. We will examine the connections between different levels, systems, and concepts, starting with fundamental approaches to sustainable development and the challenges facing the world in general and young researchers in particular today: What do we really need to know in order to understand what is going on?

Transformation verstehen – Zukunft gestalten (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: Die Vorlesung bildet den Rahmen für das Modul „Transformation“ und liefert den inhaltlichen Rahmen: Sie führt in das komplexe Thema der Gestaltung einer nachhaltigen Zukunft ein und beleuchtet unter anderem die vier Themenbereiche „Transformation“, „Werte“, „Gerechtigkeit“ und „Verantwortung“ aus historischer und gestaltungsorientierter Perspektive. Diese Konzepte prägen heute überall auf der Welt Diskussionen über unsere Zukunft. Sich mit ihnen auseinanderzusetzen, wirft oft noch mehr Fragen auf, als zunächst beantwortet werden, und kann sich manchmal wie die Suche nach dem Heiligen Gral anfühlen. Warum also sollte man sie zum Thema einer Vorlesung für alle Studienanfänger machen? Nun – warum nicht? Sie werden schnell feststellen, dass diese Fragen unabhängig davon, was Sie studieren und was Sie in Ihrer Freizeit tun, immer wieder auftauchen. Sich mit ihnen auseinanderzusetzen, kann Ihnen dabei helfen, Ihre Denk- und Handlungsweisen zu strukturieren: Angefangen bei Ihrer eigenen Rolle nicht nur als Student, sondern als Mensch, der lebt und lernt, isst und trinkt, kauft und reist, bis hin zur Rolle der Wissenschaft im Allgemeinen: Wer trägt Verantwortung für was? Was halten wir für gerecht, wie stellen wir uns eine nachhaltige Zukunft vor? Wir werden uns mit den Beiträgen befassen, die bestimmte Ansätze leisten können, aber wir werden auch gerne disziplinäre Grenzen überschreiten. Wir werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen verschiedenen Ebenen, Systemen und Konzepten beleuchten, ausgehend von grundlegenden Ansätzen zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung und den Herausforderungen, denen die Welt im Allgemeinen und junge Forscher im Besonderen heute gegenüberstehen: Was müssen wir wirklich wissen, um zu verstehen, was vor sich geht?

Werte 4: Leadership for sustainability in present complex times (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Lina Bürgener, Deepika Joon

Inhalt: This seminar aims to explore leadership in different contexts to address the challenges of the present times and anticipated situations going ahead in the future. By utilizing the following frameworks: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a specific focus on Goal 4 of the SDGs on Education, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and self-efficacy, students will work together to explore the concept of “leadership for sustainable development” in various contexts. Based on principles of group work and research-based learning, the students could explore the concept of leadership in any field of their interest. These can include teachers, heads of non-governmental organizations, companies, or organizations, or even policymakers. The framework of self-efficacy can be used to understand how well the leaders feel prepared to address the challenges of the present times.
