Inhalt: Writing About Dance examines the different ways in which dance has been written about and discussed, from the eighteenth century to today, and from newspapers to digital culture. Given that dance writing is not confined to academic journals and textbooks, this module explores the manifold forms of written and visual communication — including journalism, television, exhibitions, and film — and how such communication has not only shaped the discipline of dance over the years but has also been shaped by dance. As such, this module is designed to at once develop students’ capacities to reflect critically on the multiple factors that inform dance writing and, in so doing, cultivate their own critical voice. As students read and discuss the different types of ‘text’ produced for and by dance, they will ultimately write their own reviews of dance performances, be they ‘live’ and in-person, or pre-recorded and online. These reviews will also range in form, from traditional dance criticism to creative responses, thus flexing the full range of students’ critical thinking and writing faculties. The course will be comprised of a 1x 5hr introductory seminar, 2x full-day 8-hour workshops, and a feedback session delivered via Zoom. The introductory seminar will make use of flipped learning approaches, such as Poll Everywhere, and will provide students with an overview of the history of dance criticism, with a special focus on the different forms that dance ‘texts’ can take. The seminar will also explain the overall format of the module, including the types of assessment involved. During the first workshop, students will work together in teams to read and discuss key historical and contemporary dance texts, before identifying what goes into a dance review exactly. They will then watch a pre-recorded dance performance online, in preparation for Assessment 1. If feasible, during the second day’s workshop, students will attend a ‘live’ in-person dance performance, most probably in Lüneburg or nearby Hamburg, during which they will not only evaluate the ‘texts’ already on offer (from production materials to journalistic reviews), but also consider the many ways in which they might respond to the dance performance themselves, in preparation for Assessment 2.
