EU asylum and border control policies (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this compact course, the objective is to reach a profound understanding of EU asylum and border control policies. In light of an often emotionally charged public debate, which has produced and continues to perpetuate many myths and falsehoods, this seminar aims at facilitating a fact-based, sober, and thorough academic analysis. For this purpose, we will examine, discuss, and analyse the following central themes around the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and Schengen Borders Code: • the origins and trajectory of EU asylum and border control governance • the legal and political framework • the interests and roles of the involved actors • narratives and myths around (forced) migration and asylum • the impact of the asylum governance crisis of 2015/2016 • the recent CEAS reform • the implementation of asylum policies and border practices vis-à-vis asylum-seekers • externalisation of EU asylum governance There will be room for additional topics the participants would like to address. We can discuss this in our kick-off meeting.
