Enlightenment Theory and Critique (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course explores the intellectual movement of the Enlightenment and its enduring effect on modern thought. Focusing on philosophy, aesthetics, and social theory, we will discuss key enlightenment concepts including “progress,” “science,” “reason,” “freedom,” “the individual,” and “the secular” and analyze their effects on the contemporary world. Readings will include figures like Descartes, Kant, Newton, and Wollstonecraft, as well as influential critiques of Enlightenment thought from Marx and Nietzsche to Adorno, Horkheimer, Foucault, Althusser, Latour, Sedgwick, and Land. Throughout, we will ask questions concerning the limits of rationality, the legacy of progress, and the role of Enlightenment today. Lastly, we will address the so-called “critique of critique,” or the limits of critical theory and thought in the 21st century.
