Violence beyond the State (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Wolfgang Minatti

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 13.10.2025 - 30.01.2026 | C 12.107 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Long gone are the days where the state enjoyed the exclusive monopoly of violence – if they ever existed. Contemporary international relations know several violent non-state actors, from rebel groups, militias, and warlords all the way to private military security contractors and peacekeeping forces. How do these actors shape international politics? What political and military challenges do they face? And why do they fight? By analysing empirical cases from around the world – from Europe to Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East – this course explores organised violence beyond the nation-state. It examines phenomena such as revolution, terrorism, intervention, and insurgency to understand the diverse military and political roles of violent non-state actors in contemporary politics.

Critical Security Studies: An Introduction (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Wolfgang Minatti

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 13.10.2025 - 30.01.2026 | C 14.201 Seminarraum

Inhalt: What is security? How are we securing ourselves against contemporary threats? And are we truly making ourselves more secure? This course introduces students to the study of (critical) security politics and presents a variety of methodological and thematic angles on what security is and how it can be conceptualised. Starting with traditional approaches to international security, the course focuses on several critical theories of security. Students will explore the role of discourse, gender, and reflexivity in relation to topics ranging from war and global health to international cooperation and migration.
