Inhalt: This course will look at language as a sociological and cultural phenomenon. Basic concepts of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics will be made transparent by looking at varieties of English, German, and other languages.

Inhalt: In this seminar basic concepts and methods of text and discourse analysis will be introduced. The theoretical foundations will be applied in the analysis of different types of contextual language use, such as newspaper language, advertising, the language of literature and oral communication.
