Inhalt: COURSE DESCRIPTION “It is the theories which decides what we can observe.”(Albert Einstein) Since any given theory is an incomplete abstraction that cannot capture all aspects of the organizational phenomenon, truly complex problem-solving requires the coordination of multiple frames of reference. This course provides students with a profound introduction into various selected theories of organizations and demonstrates their relevance for understanding and designing managerial practice. Besides theoretical concepts, teaching will be based on real life Social Business cases to provide students with a practical context for course discussions. Social Business combine financial sustainability of traditional profit-oriented firms with the social objectives of non-profit-organizations Throughout the course, initiative, creativity, and critical thinking on the part of the students will be appreciated and encouraged. Students have to learn how to critically analyze different alternatives that are all attractive for a different reason. COURSE STRUCTURE This course is subdivided into a lecture and a tutorial. During lecture time I will use an interactive teaching style mixing lectures, case discussions, and multimedia presentations whenever appropriate. During the tutorial students discuss the application of theories to answer specific questions regarding Social Businesses and that they will also have to answer in their essays. It is imperative for you as a student to have read the required book chapters, articles, and cases before coming to class. Class discussion will be used to explore practical business implications from an interdisciplinary perspective.
