Inhalt: This lecture deals with the social basis of politics and its cultural context. Since mass involvement into politics is most intense in democracies, the social and cultural underpinnings of the democratic process—and of democracy itself—are in the focus of our attention. The basic reading is the fifth edition of Russell J. Dalton’s Citizen Politics.See module description.

Inhalt: The seminar accompanies the lecture. It illuminates the lecture topics from a more exemplary point of view, with a focus on selected facets. This seminar goes hand in had with the lecture under the same title. It covers topics related to the lecture but with different material and in a more focused way. The emphasis is on mass involvement in politics and its social, cultural and institutional underpinnings. Most of the mandatory reading is included in the Oxford Handbook of Political Behavior (henceforth: OHPB)
