How to do corpus linguistics: methods and applications (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course offers a hands-on introduction to Corpus Linguistics, the study of language using large, digitized collections of naturally occurring speech and writing, known as corpora. Over the course of seven weeks, you will learn how to access, analyze, and visualize corpus data, work with online resources and software applications, and create your own small corpus. In addition, the course aims to demonstrate some of the applications of Corpus Linguistics, more specifically in the areas of language variation studies and English language teaching. THIS IS AN ONLINE COURSE VIA MOODLE. NO CLASS ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. ENROLLMENT DETAILS WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE START OF THE SEMESTER.

Inhalt: Indian English, Irish English, British English, New Zealand English, English as a Lingua Franca, English as an International Language, ......: The existence of such terms prompts the question as to the status of these varieties also as to what variety/ varieties of English should be taught in the language classroom. This course examines the huge diversity of the English language in society and the role which English plays in today's world. We will carry out linguistic analyses of form and function focusing in particular on regional variation in language use, and specifically on variation across national varieties of English. Both theoretical and methodological issues form an important part of the course. Students are required to conduct empirical research primarily using corpora. The complimentary online course also belonging to this module, Corpus Linguistics: Focus on Academic Language, equips students with the requisite skills in this area. The course will be conducted through English.
