Inhalt: This workshop is open to all students interested in Conversation Analysis as a research approach. Students will get hands on experience at each stage of the process – from the recording of data to the transcription to the analysis. The workshop will consist of two parts: 1. Data collection and methods: · In the first three blocks students will become familiar with the recording equipment, transcription software, and qualitative data analysis software available at the LinALab. Students will learn about recording in different environments and different mediums and will create their own short recordings of conversation. They will then learn about various transcription conventions and use them in the transcription of their recordings. Finally, they will gain experience with the qualitative data analysis software F4Analyse and/or MaxQDA and prepare their data for further analysis. 2. The structure of talk: · In the final three blocks students will cover the fundamental structures that make up talk-in-interaction, including the sequence organisation, allocation of turns, turn design, preference organisation and action formation. After an introduction to each topic and a collective analysis of a few excerpts of conversation, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the analysis of their own transcribed recordings.
Working with Language Corpora (Workshop)
Dozent/in: Emily Black
Termin:
Einzeltermin | Mi, 27.01.2016, 14:00 - Mi, 27.01.2016, 17:00 | intern | Raum 4.001 (LinA-Lab)
Inhalt: This hands-on workshop is aimed at students planning to carry out language-related empirical investigations using language corpora (large digital collections of naturally occurring spoken and written language). Depending on students’ needs and research interests, it will address such issues as selecting an appropriate existing corpus from those available (BNC, GloWbE, SBCSAE, ICE, etc.), applying basic corpus techniques and working with the corpus analysis software AntConc. Students will have the opportunity to get feedback and advice on their project designs and data analysis. In order to make the most of this workshop, participants are asked to email the tutor, Emily Black, a brief description of their intended project ahead of the workshop. This should include their research area and, if already known, research questions and data. In addition, students will need to download the free software AntConc at http://www.laurenceanthony.net/software/antconc/ and bring a laptop with a working internet connection.
