"Wake Up Rosie!" Assessing & revealing the potential of Hanoverian museums and theaters for urban sustainable development (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Sacha Kagan

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 18.10.2016 - 31.01.2017 | W 216

Inhalt: UPDATE: We will focus at this seminar exclusively on museums. In the very first, introductory session, the seminar contents, structure, and working process will be introduced. Students' interests/preferences will be assessed (therefore all students are warmly encouraged to be present at the first session): The relative weighing of the focus on museums and/or theaters at the seminar will be established at the beginning of the semester, based on the available cases but also on the preferences of the participating students. The title slogan "Wake up Rosie!" will be further introduced, which is borrowed from an urban intervention by "Tante Trottoir": "»...und sie fiel in einen tiefen Schlaf und mit ihr der gesamte königliche Hofstaat.« Wer ist Rosie? Muß man sie wecken? Sollte man sie lieber schlafen lassen? Was hat das zu bedeuten? Sollte ich mich auch besser hinlegen?" (http://tantetrottoir.de/wakeuprosie/). In the first phase of the project seminar (sessions 2 to 6), we will discuss some selected literature about the actual and potential functions of museums, in relation to issues of sustainable urban development. (Further literature will be suggested too, beyond what we can discuss in these 5 sessions, which I encourage you to explore further individually, alongside phase 2.) In the second phase, we will prepare and conduct empirical investigations in Hannover. We will first dedicate one session (7) to an overview of the museal organizations in Hannover; specific organizations will be selected by/assigned to individual students. We will then spend three sessions together (8 to 10) on elaborating a common assessment framework (inspired by existing frameworks). The students will then share some background information and early insights about the organizations they selected, and we will discuss the preparation of interviews (session 11). Outside of class-time, the students will be expected to conduct an empirical investigation in Hannover alongside phase 2, once the assessment framework has been established (i.e. starting in the second half of December and going on throughout January). We will then dig a bit deeper into the cases, in the next two sessions together (12 and 13), discussing: - specific practices identified by the students at the investigated museums; - untapped or under-developed potential that may be discernible at the investigated museums; - approaches and conceivable leverage points: exploring potential ways to intervene in order to help reveal this potential. The final, formally 'conclusive' (14) session for this seminar, will come back to the seminar title "Wake up Rosie", taking up the spirit of Tante Trottoir's slogan, and will exploratively consider the potential intersection of museal untapped potential and arts-based interventions in the case of Hannover. Afterwards (February and first half of March), the students will finalize their gathered empirical material, analyze it, and write a final report, which may include a proposal for an intervention.
