Ethnographies of Digital Cultures (Kolloquium)

Inhalt: In this course, we will read ethnographies and do ethnography, with the aim of developing new ways of understanding digital media and digital cultures. On the one hand, we will look closely and practically at all phases of ethnographic research: Finding a field, entering a field, writing field diary and documentation with other media, working with informants, analysing data, developing interpretations, and writing an ethnographic account (if you are preparing your BA thesis, this can, but does not have to, lead you into your research for your thesis.) On the other hand, we will read and discuss both classical and contemporary ethnographies, especially those that have provided new perspectives on digital media and cultures.
Live Coding and Live Algorithms (Kolloquium)

Inhalt: This course is a hands-on introduction to live coding, a relatively recent development in live electronic music that takes the classic performer-laptop DJ paradigm of the late 90's to its natural conclusion. In live coding practice musicians program algorithmic processes on stage as a performative act, reflecting upon the relationship between an artist and their instruments, and even possibly providing a staging platform for the most “intimate portrait of human and machine” [Collins, 2011]. Besides addressing core philosophies and techniques related to the act of live coding, this course serves as an oblique entry point into a broader range of topics such as digital sound synthesis, algorithmic/generative art and questions of liveness in computermediated performance. The course will conclude with an excursion to a major European arts festival curating works that bring to question the trichotomy of art, technology and science.
