Corpus Linguistics for Language Research and Teaching (Online Course) (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course offers a hands-on introduction to Corpus Linguistics, the study of language using large, digitized collections of naturally occurring speech and writing, known as corpora. Over the course of seven weeks, you will learn how to access, analyze, and visualize corpus data, work with online resources and software applications, and create your own small corpus. In addition, the course aims to demonstrate some of the applications of Corpus Linguistics, more specifically in the areas of language variation studies and English language teaching. THIS IS AN ONLINE COURSE VIA MOODLE. NO CLASS ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. ENROLLMENT DETAILS WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE START OF THE SEMESTER.

School English vs. English in Today's World: Focus on Conversational Grammar (Seminar)

Inhalt: "I says", "innit", "I'm like", "but like", ... are all frequent features of conversational English around the world. They are generally not, however, taught in English EFL textbooks. Rather, the standard taken in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom is still a written, educated variety, often far removed from that spoken by native speakers. In addition, a British English standard is the usual choice of norm in the EFL classroom. In schools, learners are made aware that English is spoken in India, Ireland, New Zealand and many more places. However, they know nothing of Indian English, Irish English or New Zealand English. Nor do textbooks mention the fact that the learners will be using English in English as a Lingua Franca contexts - contexts which again are associated with a particular use of English. This course examines the huge diversity of the English language in society and in today's world and contrasts this with Standard English spoken in schools. It also probes at attitudes to different uses of and varieties of English. We carry out textbook analyses and also linguistic analyses of form and function focusing in particular on cross-varietal variation. Both theoretical and methodological issues form an important part of the course. Students are required to conduct empirical research primarily using corpora (naturally occurring spoken and written language). The complementary online course also belonging to this module, "Corpus Linguistics for Language Research and Teaching", equips students with the requisite skills in this area. The course will be conducted through English.
