Inhalt: Entrepreneurship makes the invisible visible. Said differently, entrepreneurs identify an opportunity, come up with an idea on how to solve a pressing problem and put their energy into turning that idea into reality and infusing it into the social fabric. Entrepreneurship as a discipline concentrates on understanding how and with what consequences actors (e.g., new ventures, individual entrepreneurs) discover, create and exploit opportunities. Digital technologies such as cloud computing, social media, web-based platforms and data analytics impact these entrepreneurial processes and outcomes. The question of “how” these digital technologies impact entrepreneurship is the guiding question we seek to answer in this course. To move towards answers, we will first explore various perspectives on what it means to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Some perspectives focus on the individual entrepreneurs, some highlight the role of the context whereas others argue that entrepreneurship could be understood as a journey where the ongoing interactions with the environment shape how ventures exploit opportunities. Using an understanding of these perspectives as a vantage point, we then explore issues such as how entrepreneurs create novel digital technologies and how digital technologies, in turn, shape how (other) entrepreneurs engage in exploiting opportunities. In our exploration, we will discuss various examples documented in the literature having venture-centric or an industry/field-level perspective as well as draw on guest lectures and interactive exercises.

Inhalt: Today’s society faces tremendous social issues. Millions of people in developing countries suffer from poverty, unemployment, lack of health care, sanitation and education. Even in rich western countries too many people are excluded from active participation in society and economy, for instance due to their gender, age, race or health. Solving these social issues has been seen as a task of the public and civil sector for a long time, but unfortunately success has been limited. However, in recent years a new breed of entrepreneurs emerged that joined the fight against social issues. They discovered that the power of entrepreneurship can open up totally new opportunities. Social Entrepreneurs view social challenges not as an obstacle, but as an accelerator for innovation. They create inclusive businesses which foster societal change. As the Nobel peace prize winner of 2006 – Mohammed Yunus – once put it: “Every Time I See a Problem, I Create a Business to Solve It!” This course will introduce you to the field of Social Entrepreneurship. We start by building a solid theoretical basis. You will get in-depth insights through a kick-off lecture on global social challenges and learn more about Social Entrepreneurs and their businesses (26.10.2018). Next, you will join two research workshops. The first one (14.12.2018) requires team-work! First, we split into groups of 3 students. Each team will present an academic paper from the field of social entrepreneurship as if they would have written it themselves (take the role of the researcher). After each presentation there will be room for questions. The team is expected to defend “their” paper and facilitate the discussion. Second, we will merge teams into a slightly bigger groups of 6 people. These groups will get different assignments. At the heart of each assignment is an analysis of a UNDP Case Study. This analysis will be done with tools from managerial practice (e.g. Business Model Canvas). During the second workshop (15.12.2018) you will learn more about Case Study Research . This workshop will prepare you to conduct your own exploratory study. After the kick-off lecture and the two research workshops, you are ready to reach out to a Social Entrepreneur and conduct a (semi-structured) interview. The interview and written documents (on- and offline) about the Social Entrepreneur and his/her company will be analyzed. Until February 8’th you will write your own Case Study. In order to facilitate your research, you will have access to various forms of support (such as an interview manual, a Q&A via skype, etc.). On February 15’th we will all gather and present our findings. You are required to make a poster (A0) and give a brief presentation.
