Inhalt: Dada was not a singular movement, nor was it just an aesthetic experiment; it was for many of those who practiced it a way of life and a political stance. In its beginnings in Zurich it was marked by its rebellion against the hatred, destruction and high-art elitism of the early twentieth century. After its fractures across Germany, France and America, it was divided by politics and aesthetics as opposing components. Performance, poetry, music, sculpture, collages, photomontages, photography, film, magazines, painting were all utitlised as mediums to present the movements’ ideals. This course will examine these various mediums and the artists who were at the centre of the various factions to better understand how dada has influenced art and art history. In our seminars we will discuss different topics, among them: dada magazines, dada manifestos, and dada and gender. We will consider questions about the materiality, politics, historical representations of dada, and by the end of this course, have a greater understanding of why dada has been so influential. We focus on object histories as well as scholarly and critical interventions in the subject. This will be reflected in our readings and in our Exkursion. Part of the seminars will be a two-day Exkursion to Berlin. We will visit archives and exhibitions relating to dada.
