Introduction to Political Sociology and Political Culture II (Seminar)

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 15.10.2018 - 01.02.2019 | C 14.201 Seminarraum
Einzeltermin | Mi, 07.11.2018, 16:15 - Mi, 07.11.2018, 17:45 | C 14.201 Seminarraum

Inhalt: The seminar accompanies the lecture. It illuminates the lecture topics from a more exemplary point of view, with a focus on selected facets. This seminar goes hand in hand with the lecture under the same title. Although it covers similar topics, the seminar is based on different material, offers a more hands-on approach to the survey data bases of political culture research (i.e. World Values Survey/European Values Survey, Afrobarometer, Latinobarometer, etc.), and allows for more in-depth and critical discussion of the empirical findings. In more detail, the following topics are addressed: (1) Comparative opinion surveys (2) The nature of mass beliefs and political culture. (3) Social foundations of society (4) The origin of civic communities and their impact. (5) The rise of postmaterialist preferences. (6) Cultural change and the rise of emancipative values (7) Trends in social capital research. (8) Determinants of voting and voter turnout. (9) The widening of people’s political action repertoire (10) People’s understanding of democracy (11) How religious beliefs shape politics. (12) Trends in autocratization research (13) The link between happiness and democracy. The selected course readings combine (1) classical and influential works in the political culture literature, (2) recent research articles of major political science journals, and (3) textbook chapters for a broader overview.
