Inhalt: At its core, ethnography is the attempt to understand the perspectives and actions of groups and individuals’ through forms of fieldwork observation and participation. Whilst a highly contested term, in practice and in theory, ethnography gives primacy to a ‘cultural’ reading and interpretation of social relations, actions and practices. Originating in anthropology, ethnography and its associated field methods are used by sociologists, educational researchers and others, to explore and theorise social and cultural processes as they unfold (in-situ). Although there can be quantitative aspects to ethnographic research, it is generally viewed as a ‘qualitative’ methodology. This course will provide an orientation towards ethnography and ethnographic practice, drawing from classic and contemporary sources in sociology and educational research. Students will gain a deeper understanding of its theoretical underpinnings and the connections to the wider field of social theory. The course will examine the claims made for ethnography as a distinct way of generating knowledge in the social sciences, and the diverse ways it can be deployed as a method/ology, ethical issues in the conduct of fieldwork, and the forms of representation and generalisability that are possible through ethnographic work.
