Contemporary Canadian Culture: A Search for Identity (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Maria Moss

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 14.10.2019 - 31.01.2020 | C 5.311 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Many of the texts written, read, and studied in Canada over the past two decades ask questions and challenge assumptions about the nature of Canada´s relationship with others: with minorities, with their direct neighbors (most specifically, the United States), with their Native populations, and with non-human others. Taking its cue from both W.H. New´s study, "Borderlands: How We Talk About Canada" and the collection of lectures by Margaret Atwood, "Strange Things: The Malevolent North in Canadian Literature," we will explore contemporary Canadian culture and analyze the manifold ways in which it expresses a specifically “Canadian” identity. And since there will be a symposium on "human-animal studies" in January 2020, special attention will be given to the quintessential Canadian topic of "critical animal studies."
