Your understanding of the key issues in political sociology and culture will develop by readings that offer basic insights into the societal foundations of dictatorship and democracy and the related regime dynamics, with an emphasis on the forces of modernization. The readings also provide lessons about the societal configurations that weaken democracy and make them susceptible to backsliding and the challenges of nativist populism. The readings covering these issues intersect the disciplines of political science, sociology, psychology, and economics. Upon completion of this course, you will have gained a basic comprehension of the societal conditions of politics in modern mass polities.
