Inhalt: This course will investigate the genesis of biology (especially in its French and German contexts) as a science, philosophical movement, and as a socio-political concern. We will look at tensions between Mechanism and Vitalism, Rationalism and Romanticism, and use the emergence of biology to examine the classical difficulties in defining the boundaries of what counts as science.
