Inhalt: This seminar will survey the music of the Baroque Era, beginning with the foundation of music from the High Renaissance and the first few decades of the 17th Century, and ending with the masterworks of Vivaldi, Bach and Handel. We will focus on just a few major representative works of each of the great composers (instead of trying to survey all Baroque music, , and through in-class analysis, we will seek to understand how these special works represent major innovations. In considering the musical styles and forms of these works, we will also examine the cultural – philosophical, political, religious and social - contexts which led to their creation. We will begin with the early 17th Century and the splendor of Venetian music, followed by the rise of opera. After this beginning, we will examine trends in the second half of the 17th Century, including the works of Lully in France, Purcell in England and Schütz and Buxtehude in Germany. We then arrive in the “High Baroque” and the monumental masterpieces of Vivaldi, Handel and Bach.
