Inhalt: In this course we want to find out what an English teacher needs to cope with the many different classes in this special German school called 'Berufsschule'. It may sound strange but this process is a very individual one on the one hand and at the same time supported by a clear frame work in which you should be able to move (methods / techniques). The individual side of becoming a language teacher is to find out what kind of teacher you are – this is the approach you choose to take (for Berufsschule it may be necassary to work with different approaches to do the job accordingly). This doesn’t happen over night or during your BA-studies here or after you will have finished your Master but up till then this picture of what kind of teacher you are should be turning from blurred to an almost focused one (Portfolio). This is one important long term aim of university: To find your approach of how to teach English. Studying ‘Second Language Acquisition’ (SLA) will sharpen your eyes of how the fascinating process of learning a second language (most likely) happens. In the lecture you got an overview about the discussion and undisputed facts of SLA (last semester). The latter are the almost indestructible pillars on which the teaching of English rests today. The former is the bit where you can use the most important question word during university time: why? To find your approach of teaching English you should always ask yourself why you think this is a good approach or not. So this is what we are going to do in this semester’s course: To lay the foundation of your approach of teaching English at the Berufsschule.

It may sound strange but this process is a very individual one and at the same time supported by a clear frame work in which you should be able to move (methods/techniques). The individual side of becoming a foreign language teacher is to find out what kind of teacher you may be. It doesn’t happen over night or during your BA-studies here or even after you have finished your studies but by then the picture of what kind of teacher you will be should be focused. This is one important long term aim: To find your approach of how to teach English. The module (Introduction to TEFL) consists of "Second Language Acquisition" (lecture) and "Approaches and Methods". Here, we will lay the foundation of your approach of teaching English, discuss methods and talk about basic theories.
