Inhalt: This module introduces students to the theories and practice of studying English literature. We will be looking at a variety of theoretical concepts and contemporary approaches and applying these to literary texts from different historical periods and genres. At the same time, we will consider the social and cultural contexts of literature as well as it's aesthetic, rhetorical, and ideological aspects. In the module, you will acquire the competencies required to study literature effectively: how to use the library and the internet, how to assess reference material and online resources, and how to present your findings. Our discussion will be based on a range of primary texts including short plays, short stories, poems, and one novel. At the beginning of term, you can vote between the three novels listed below. All of them are available in the library if you would like to take a look at them. The novel which receives the most votes will be part of our reading material. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde "1984" by George Orwell "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald The introduction recommended for this course is Meyer, Michael: English and American Literatures. Tübingen: Francke 2011. (ISBN 9783825235505) If you would like to prepare in advance, please read George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" and Susan Glaspell's "Trifles".
