Inhalt: UPDATE 24.03.2020 COURSE WILL TAKE PLACE IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT - SOME DATES ARE TO BE CHANGED In this module, students will engage academically with subjects which broadly belong to the domain of the humanities: artefacts such as films, video, installation, and figurative art. The aim is to cultivate the ability of 'reading' and analyzing such objects. The theme raised by these different objects is modern individualism; while in can be treated in an affirmative or critical way, or, indeed, by expressing its ambivalence. Building on the broad historical transformations outlined in the module 'Modern Freedom', this course draws attention to individual experiences of freedom. Its liberating and emancipatory potentials and liberating features are discussed alongside the perils of a self-satisfied individualism. Themes touched upon are: the modern quest for authenticity and originality; instrumental rationality and the mastery of one environment; individualism and civic engagement; individualism and the quest for meaning.
