Inhalt: This course starts from the premise that we need some practical understanding of media production to engage with it critically. To this end, this course emphasizes practical skills in the name of critical inquiry. We will learn the core skills of moving image narrative: match cutting (before and after movement); parallel editing shot-reverse shot patterns, symbolic editing, and soviet montage. These skills will help deepen our inquiry into the ways in which the moving image informs our representations of the world. We will also think about what it means to be the intended public for a given piece of media. We will also bring this new toolkit to bear on the manipulations of fake news and what I have called “End-User Narrative”. Our meetings will take a workshop format, using prompts from the historical moment to more fully understand how streaming media, filter bubbles, and atomization create our contemporary media landscape. Module: Intro to Video Editing Description & Objective: In this one-day workshop, students will edit a short video. Techniques and concepts covered include: intro to editing, transitions & effects, importing and exporting videos for web or broadcast, best practice workflow. Previous experience required: None. Hardware required: students must bring their own laptop to the session. Software required: The workshop will support working with industry standard software, Adobe Premiere Pro. A free, legal 7-day trial version can be downloaded from Adobe.com - students should come to class with software already installed. A free, legal 7-day trial version can be downloaded from Ableton.com - students should come to class with software already installed. If using a trial version, students are recommended install it immediately prior to the day of the module. Plus: 2 additional one-day modules to be announced. Inhalt: The goal of this course will be the introduction of the students to the methodology of creative filmmaking, beginning with the theoretical background on documentary history and construction with an overview of the samples of acknowledged historical and contemporary documentaries. Next to the film history, the context of using documentary as a tool for anthropological research will be also addressed. The students will be introduced into the discussion of not only the aesthetic choices of the selected movies, but also the potential uses of the visual projects for addressing particular social problems and the ethical consequences of it. Apart from the skill of differentiating the basic documentary narrative styles, the students will gain a set of practical skills. The theoretical background will be intersecting with the practical assignments of creative storytelling, constructing, scouting and documenting an exemplary character within the area of the workshop, describing the logline and performing a pitching introducing the chosen topic into the forum of the listeners. The final assignment, completed after the course ending and evaluated by the teacher via internet, will be a construction of the 3-minute long documentary-a portrait of a chosen character or social phenomenon. Due to the current circumstances, the seminar will be taught online. If offline teaching becomes possible again, we will adjust accordingly. Please make sure to take part in the first online session – which will be an opportunity to discuss and plan possible further adjustments to the forms and dates of online teaching.
