The Cultures of Artifical Intelligence and Big Data (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Robert Samuel Hughes Rapoport

Termin:
14-täglich | Donnerstag | 14:00 - 17:30 | 16.04.2020 - 09.07.2020 | HMS

Inhalt: The most general aim of this course is to chart the relationship between artificial intelligence and cultural change. We will primarily focus on ideas and developments beginning in the Post-War period. That being said, we will occasionally go further back into the history of science and computation for points of comparison. What we see, hear, and read in personalized content streams are increasingly dependent on AI/machine learning models. Our cultural moment is defined by the evolving dynamic between culture AI and big data, demanding a new kind of literacy. To this end, this course will interrogate how the social, political-economic, and cultural landscape is changing in relation to artificial intelligence. Students will develop a toolkit for thinking critically about this evolving dynamic. The ultimate goal is to ask more nuanced questions about artificial intelligence’s impact on society. Due to the current circumstances, the seminar will be taught online. If offline teaching becomes possible again, we will adjust accordingly. Please make sure to take part in the first online session – which will be an opportunity to discuss and plan the forms and dates of online teaching.

Virtual Reality – Theory and Practice (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Helena Lingor

Termin:
14-täglich | Donnerstag | 09:45 - 13:15 | 16.04.2020 - 09.07.2020 | HMS

Inhalt: Even though virtual reality technologies were being researched and developed already since decades, it wasn't until 2016 for this medium to finally become affordable and accessible to the end consumer market. Ever since new VR apps are continuing to amaze the audience. But VR has also opened new possibilities to science and industries. This seminar will explore the new possibilities and challenges of VR, both, as artistic medium and in relation to industries and sciences. Related concepts like simulation, immersion and interactivity will be discussed and put in perspective to VR. The specific challenges in regards to its narrative strategies will be explored. The seminar attempts to balance theory and practice. During the theoretical parts relevant texts will be read, analyzed and discussed. During the practical parts students will, both, experience VR as users and develop a small VR application themselves. Due to the current circumstances, the seminar will be taught online. If offline teaching becomes possible again, we will adjust accordingly. Please make sure to take part in the first online session – which will be an opportunity to discuss and plan the forms and dates of online teaching.
